Local 21 is searching for feedback on how to better engage the membership and encourage participation at General and Special meetings and events.
General and Special meetings serve an essential point of contact that allows the membership to voice concerns and raise issues.
For example, the Union had prepared an alternative day for the ratification vote for consideration at the March 11, 2025 General meeting, unfortunately we did not reach quorum and not able to discuss and vote on a possible alternative ratification date.
FYI:
Bylaw Section 7 (d) states that the minimum number of members required to be in attendance for the transaction of business during any General or Special meeting shall be twenty-one (21) members, this quorum total shall include two (2) from the Executive Board.
The Executive has also been contacted by members stating they were unaware of the ratification vote date. Currently, as with older contracts, the Union reaches out to members using three (3) points on contact for meetings and major events, they are as follows:
1. Notices on the "Upcoming Events" section of the Union website;
2. Posters being placed on the Union Boards (If your area does not have such a board please let the Union know and we will work to get one approved for your area); and
3.. Posting a notice on City Connect.
Currently the Union is looking to implement the following to assist in attendance and communication moving forward (List subject to expansion).
- Reinstating the mailing list (this would require a mass mail out to members who would then sign up for the mailing list);
- The return of hybrid digital / in person General meetings (we can currently do this for non-voting meetings) ... we are waiting on CUPE National to locate & approve a secure voting software; and
- Parking lot / direct questions for General meetings so members can ask specific questions and receive answers at General meetings.
If you have any feedback / ideas on how to better communications and participation; please leave suggestions using the contact form.
